The Garden Doesn’t Close in October
Posted on October 01, 2026
October has a habit of making us think the garden is finished for another year. The evenings draw in, leaves begin to fall and the warmer days of summer suddenly seem a long way behind us.
But autumn can be one of the loveliest — and increasingly one of the most sociable — times to spend outdoors.
There’s something rather special about a garden at this time of year. The colours change almost by the day, the light becomes softer and even familiar surroundings can take on a completely different character. On a bright autumn morning, a quiet spot in the garden with somewhere comfortable to sit can be every bit as inviting as it was in July.
And when darkness falls, the autumn garden can come alive in a completely different way.
From summer barbecues to autumn celebrations
Outdoor entertaining certainly doesn't have to finish with summer.
October and November bring their own reasons for gathering outside. Oktoberfest-inspired parties, Halloween celebrations and Bonfire Night all lend themselves perfectly to gardens and outdoor spaces.
The barbecue might make way for a fire pit, strings of lights and lanterns. Summer drinks might be replaced by mugs of something warm. Add a few blankets, some food and somewhere comfortable to sit and a chilly autumn evening can become an occasion in its own right.
Halloween in particular has become an increasingly outdoor affair, with decorated gardens, pumpkins and families gathering outside, while Bonfire Night has always given us a very British reason to wrap up warm and head into the garden.
It might require another layer or two, but that's part of the fun.

A garden for all four seasons
Good outdoor spaces aren't just designed for summer.
A well-positioned bench or seating area can give you somewhere to enjoy the first signs of spring, find some shade during summer, watch the leaves turn in autumn and appreciate those surprisingly beautiful crisp winter mornings.
It can also become part of the way a garden is used socially. Permanent outdoor seating gives people somewhere to gather without having to bring furniture out every time friends and family come round.
Where that seating is positioned can make all the difference. A bench facing the afternoon sun, tucked beside a sheltered wall, gathered around a fire pit or overlooking a favourite part of the garden can extend the time we spend outside well beyond the traditional summer months.
And as planting changes with the seasons, the furniture within a garden changes with it. Timber has a natural affinity with its surroundings. As it weathers and matures, it becomes part of the landscape rather than simply something placed within it.
Time to enjoy a different kind of garden
Perhaps that's part of autumn's appeal.
The garden becomes different rather than redundant. Sometimes it's quiet — somewhere to sit with a coffee on a crisp October morning. At other times it can be full of people, pumpkins, lights, food and the glow of a fire on an autumn evening.
At Woodcraft, we've made outdoor seating for gardens and landscapes of every shape and size, from traditional garden benches to curved seating, tables and completely bespoke pieces designed for a particular location.
Whatever the season, we think a garden should contain somewhere that makes you want to stop, sit down and stay for a while.
Because the garden doesn't close in October.
It just changes the way we use it.
