Some places become part of a person's story

Posted on July 10, 2026

Everyone has somewhere.

A favourite park. A path walked every morning. A bridge crossed hundreds of times. A quiet spot beside the water where life seemed to slow down for a while.

Those places quietly become part of our memories.

This week, another handcrafted York memorial bench has found its home in Hull's East Park, overlooking the lake and the elegant bridge that has become one of the park's most recognisable landmarks.

Commissioned in loving memory of David Patrick Sullivan (1979–2025), the bench gives family, friends and visitors somewhere to pause, reflect and simply enjoy the surroundings that meant so much.

Over the years, Woodcraft has supplied many memorial benches throughout East Park. Each one tells a different story, carries a different name and celebrates a different life, yet together they have become something much larger than individual memorials.

They have quietly become part of the park itself.

Children will sit on them after feeding the ducks. Dog walkers will stop for a rest. Runners will catch their breath. Couples will watch the seasons change across the lake.

Many of those people may never know whose name is engraved on the backrest.

Framing the inscription are two delicately engraved rainbow motifs, adding a personal touch chosen by David's family. Like every memorial bench, it's these individual details that make each commission unique.

But for one family, that bench will always be David's place.

That is one of the most remarkable things about memorial benches. They honour one life while continuing to serve thousands of others, creating moments of comfort, conversation and reflection for generations to come.

It's a privilege to know that another handcrafted York bench has become part of East Park's story.
