Notice Boards Still Quietly Serving the Community

Posted on July 16, 2026

Some products quietly become part of everyday life.

Years after installation, these handcrafted timber community notice boards continue to serve the historic market town of Hedon, providing a place where local news, events, public notices and community information can be shared with residents and visitors alike.

These notice boards were installed in Hedon several years ago and continue to do exactly what they were designed for.

Unlike many pieces of street furniture that are noticed only when they're new, a notice board earns its place over time. Every poster advertising a charity event, every local club looking for new members, every council announcement and every community celebration helps connect people with the place they call home.

One of the most distinctive features of Hedon's collection is the bespoke triangular three-sided community notice board located in the heart of the town centre. Designed so notices can be viewed from three different directions, it makes excellent use of a busy public space where several streets meet.

Rather than producing a standard off-the-shelf design, the board was created specifically for its setting, demonstrating how Woodcraft's bespoke approach allows each piece of street furniture to complement both its surroundings and the way people naturally move through them. It's a small detail, but one that makes a noticeable difference in a historic town where every square metre of public space matters.

Woodcraft has always believed that good street furniture should do more than simply occupy a space. It should contribute to it. Whether it's a park bench encouraging conversation, a planter adding colour to a town centre, or a notice board keeping neighbours informed, each piece plays a small part in strengthening a community.

It's especially fitting that they're located in one of East Yorkshire's most historic towns. Hedon was once one of England's most important medieval ports, receiving its Royal Charter in 1154 and becoming prosperous through trade long before nearby Hull existed. Today its Georgian streets, independent businesses and magnificent St Augustine's Church still reflect that rich history, while the notice boards continue to support the modern community that has grown around them.

There is something rather satisfying about seeing timber craftsmanship age gracefully. The wood has weathered naturally, developing the character that only comes with time, while remaining an attractive and practical feature within the streetscape.

Sometimes the best compliment isn't that people notice something.

It's that they simply expect it to be there.

Every community is different, which is why no single notice board is right for every location. Over the years, Woodcraft has produced a wide variety of handcrafted timber notice boards for town centres, parks, cemeteries, churches, schools, visitor attractions and public spaces across the UK. From traditional single-door designs to bespoke multi-sided installations and larger community information displays, each is built to suit its setting and intended purpose.
