Making It Personal – When a Bench Becomes Your Bench

There is a point during the making of some Woodcraft benches when they stop being simply a York, Beverley, Scarborough or Lutyens and become something completely individual.

Sometimes it happens when a name is engraved into the top rail.

Sometimes it's an unusual symbol, a company logo or family crest.

And sometimes the customer asks us to change the dimensions, alter the arms, create a curve, combine elements from two different designs or make something that has never existed before.

That's when a bench really becomes your bench.

Start With a Design – Then Make It Your Own

Our established bench designs can often be adapted to suit an individual customer, location or purpose.

The York Bench alone has been produced in numerous lengths and configurations, with different top rails and arm styles. Over the years it has also provided the basis for companion seating, back-to-back benches and large bespoke curved installations.

Other commissions have involved taking features from different Woodcraft designs and bringing them together to create something new.

Having our own workshop means we aren't restricted to producing furniture in standard sizes or configurations. If a customer has something different in mind, it's always worth asking whether we can make it.

Words, Pictures and Symbols

Personalisation doesn't always require changing the structure of a bench.

An inscription can transform an otherwise standard design into a unique piece of furniture.

Memorial inscriptions remain one of the most popular requests, but engraving can go considerably further. Woodcraft has reproduced logos, decorative motifs, symbols and other artwork directly into timber, alongside more traditional plaques and lettering.

An engraving might commemorate someone, celebrate an event, recognise a donation, identify an organisation or simply add a detail that means something to its owner.

Sometimes only the person who commissioned it knows the full story – and that's part of its charm.

Built for the Place It Will Call Home

Bespoke furniture often begins with the location rather than the furniture itself.

Perhaps a bench needs to follow the curve of an existing wall. Maybe it has to sit beneath a particular structure, fit an awkward corner or provide seating around an established feature.

These are the projects where measurements, drawings and conversations gradually turn an idea into something tangible.

Rather than asking a space to accommodate a standard piece of furniture, the furniture can be designed to accommodate the space.

No Two Stories Need to Be the Same

Over more than 35 years of furniture making, we've learnt that customers often have a very clear idea of what they want – even if they don't know whether it can actually be made.

Quite often, it can.

From a small change to one of our established designs to a completely bespoke commission, we're always happy to discuss an idea and work out the best way of turning it into something that can be enjoyed for many years.

After all, the most interesting piece of furniture is sometimes the one that isn't in the catalogue yet.
