Made to Fit: A Bespoke Curved Bench for a Chiswick Garden

Sometimes the shape of a garden determines the shape of the furniture that belongs in it.
A private customer in Chiswick, London, came to Woodcraft with an unusual space to fill. Rather than following a regular curve, the existing garden wall changes direction and radius, making a standard straight or uniformly curved bench unsuitable.
The solution began with something wonderfully simple: the customer drew the shape they wanted at full size on the ground.
Working from that pattern, the Woodcraft workshop translated the outline into a completely bespoke hardwood bench, carefully forming the back, frame and individual seat slats to follow the changing curves.

From a simple outline to a finished bench
The workshop photographs show just how much work sits behind the apparently effortless shape of the finished piece.
Unlike a bench following a single, consistent radius, this one needed to change direction as it travelled around the garden. Each section had to work with the next, while the seat slats, back rails and supporting structure all had to come together as one continuous piece of furniture.
It's a good example of why bespoke really does mean bespoke at Woodcraft. There wasn't an existing bench to alter or a standard size to select. The furniture was made specifically for one particular space.

Following the garden rather than fighting it
Once installed, the reason for going to all that trouble becomes clear.
The finished bench follows the line of the surrounding planting and brickwork, turning an awkwardly shaped corner into a generous area of garden seating without trying to impose a different geometry on the space.
And there's no better recommendation than a happy customer. We're delighted to say that after receiving the finished bench, they were pleased enough to place a second order with Woodcraft.
Although judging by the photographs, somebody else may have claimed the best seat in the garden already.
