Another Woodcraft Bench Finds its Home at Hedon Road Cemetery
Posted on July 14, 2026
The latest addition to Hedon Road Cemetery in Hull is this beautifully crafted 6ft York bench, finished in a rich protective teak oil that enhances the natural grain of the hardwood while providing long-lasting protection against the elements.
Installed for a private customer, the bench features a discreet engraving of the Eye of Horus on the back rail — an ancient Egyptian symbol traditionally associated with protection, healing and remembrance. While the personal significance behind the engraving remains known only to those who commissioned it, it adds another thoughtful and deeply personal detail to a bench created to be enjoyed for many years to come.

What makes this installation particularly interesting is its location.
Hedon Road Cemetery has been serving the people of Hull since the 1870s and today remains one of the city's most peaceful green spaces. Alongside thousands of civilian graves, the cemetery is also recognised by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, with servicemen and women from both the First and Second World Wars laid to rest amongst its avenues of mature trees. It stands as one of Hull's important places of remembrance, where local history and national history quietly sit side by side.

Only last month, Woodcraft shared the story of two York benches supplied to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission at Souda Bay War Cemetery in Crete. Although this new installation has no known connection to those memorials, it is another reminder that benches often become part of places where people naturally stop to reflect.

Whether overlooking a formal garden, standing beside a village green, or positioned within a cemetery, a well-made bench encourages people to pause for a moment. To remember someone. To gather their thoughts. Or simply to enjoy a little peace and quiet.
This latest York bench also joins a growing number of Woodcraft benches already installed throughout Hedon Road Cemetery, gradually becoming part of the landscape and providing comfortable places for visitors to spend time with loved ones, both past and present.

Sometimes the craftsmanship is what first catches the eye but years later, it's the memories made around it that matter most.
