Crafting a Curved Scarborough Wooden Bench for a Customer in Edinburgh

At Woodcraft UK, we take great pride in creating handcrafted wooden benches that combine traditional joinery with thoughtful design. One of our signature designs is the Scarborough Bench—a timeless favourite among customers looking for comfort, elegance, and durability. Recently, we had the pleasure of crafting a curved Scarborough bench for a private customer in Edinburgh, and the project turned out to be a wonderful showcase of what we do best.

What made this order particularly memorable was not just the craftsmanship involved, but also the customer’s enthusiasm. Instead of arranging delivery, he chose to collect the bench himself—arriving with his classic car trailer ready to take his new piece home.

Building the Curved Scarborough Bench

Crafting a curved bench adds an exciting set of challenges. Every component—from the rails to the back slats—has to follow the precise arc of the bench’s sweeping form. This requires accuracy, patience, and a lot of clamps!

Below are some behind-the-scenes photos from our workshop in Hull, East Yorkshire, showing the bench gradually taking shape.

Shaping the Framework

We begin by constructing the curved front and back rails, ensuring they follow the exact radius required by the customer’s space. Accuracy here is essential, as every other part of the bench aligns with these curves.

Adding the Back Slats

Each back slat is shaped individually and clamped into position. The gentle wave pattern provides both elegance and comfort, and it’s a hallmark of our Scarborough design.

Crafting the Seat Sections

The contoured seat panels are assembled and shaped before being fitted to the frame. This ensures comfort and a seamless flow along the curve of the bench.

Collection Day

Once completed, the bench was loaded carefully onto the customer's trailer. The pictures show its final form—a beautiful, fully assembled curved Scarborough bench, ready to begin its life in a garden hundreds of miles away.

Customer Feedback

After a long journey back to Edinburgh and installation in his garden, our customer kindly sent us a message:
