A New Lutyens bench taking shape

The Lutyens bench remains to this day a very popular style of bench, but did you know there is a contemporary variation on this classic that is gaining in popularity?
Construction on this variation commonly known as the Low Back Lutyens is now currently underway at Woodcraft, commissioned for a private client. The initial stages reveal the bench's form, showcasing the signature scroll shaped armrests characteristic of the Lutyens style. This particular design deviates from the traditional opulence of the original Lutyens benches. Instead, it features a more subdued backrest, resulting in a quietly confident aesthetic. The overall shape is reminiscent of a Chesterfield lounge suite.
As you can see from the pictures, the entire frame is being clamped together to facilitate the gluing process. The classic Lutyens design incorporates supporting cross-sections of wooden components that strengthens the seat and backrest, a structural element that contributes significantly to the frame's overall stability and considerable structural integrity.
The customer had really done their home work when coming to us. They had studied exactly what kind of Low Back Lutyens benches were being made and based on that produced a drawing for us so that we could understand what kind of bench they were after. This drawing served as a guide, illustrating the desired bench style and specifications and this proactive approach facilitated a smooth understanding of the project's requirements.
We cannot wait to show you more pictures of the bench when it is completed. The Lutyens style design is truly a magnificent creation from a genius of his day and we hope that maybe one day this low back version will be popular enough to be incorporated into our standard range of garden benches, just like it's sibling.
